About the chart

The Top Downloads chart lists the Toucan tracks which have had the highest number of downloads across all music sites for a particular year. This chart is compiled on 1st January every year using figures from the previous year.

Tracks do not have to be produced or released during the year of the chart to feature, so you will sometimes see the same tracks in different years' charts. Usually, tracks released during a particular year perform better in the following year's chart; this is because, during the year of release, the track is not online for the full year so is at a disadvantage.

The Top Downloads chart has been compiled annually since 2000, and although originally a good indicator of the most popular tracks, it is now more of an indicator of which tracks have had the most exposure. Due to slower average internet connection speeds back in 2000, people were likely to only spend time downloading tracks they had listened to and liked, whilst these days faster connection speeds enable people who have no intention of keeping tracks to download them purely for listening purposes.
